I genovesi Eris Pluvia contribuirono nel 1991, con l’esordio “Rings of Earthly Light”, alla rinascita della scena progressiva italiana; un disco da annoverare senza troppe esitazioni tra i classici di quel periodo, che purtroppo non ebbe alcun seguito fino al più recente “Third Eye Light”, edito da AMS Records nel 2010 (AMS 188 CD).

“Different Earths” esce perciò a sei anni dal predecessore, rinnovandone la formula e restituendoci una band ancora ispirata, che allo sfoggio di tecnica tipico di certo rock progressivo preferisce un approccio più delicato e lineare ma non per questo meno sentito ed emozionante. I nomi di riferimento non sono cambiati nel tempo: Camel e Pink Floyd in primis, omaggiati in particolar modo negli assoli di chitarra, negli interventi di flauto e nei tappeti di tastiere.

Anzi, è innanzitutto la pastorale semplicità il punto di forza di questa release, che riesce nel difficile compito di risultare attuale pur ispirandosi a gruppi e sonorità del passato. Un disco emozionante!

The Genoese band Eris Pluvia contributed in 1991, with the debut album “Rings of Earthly Light”, to the rebirth of the Italian progressive rock scene; a record to be counted without much hesitation among the classics of that era, which unfortunately did not have any follow-up until the recent “Third Eye Light”, published by AMS Records in 2010 (AMS 188 CD).

“Different Earths” comes then six years after its predecessor, renewing its formula and giving us a band still inspired, that prefers, to the display of instrumental technique typical of certain progressive rock standards, a more delicate and linear, heartfelt and exciting approach. Eris Pluvia’s reference names have not changed over time: hints of Camel and Pink Floyd can be heard especially in the guitar solos, in the flute melodies and in the sustained keyboard sounds.

Indeed, this release finds its strength in the pastoral simplicity of its songs, which succeed in the difficult task of being up to date while referring to groups and sounds of the past. An exciting album!

To me, "Trip The Life Fantastic" was a must-buy on "Bandcamp Friday" this time. It's one of the few "Drifting Sun" albums not already found in my collection, and an essential one, because it marks the beginning of the prolific collaboration of composer/keyboardist Pat Sanders and lyricist/singer Peter Falconer, which was, in my opinion, the best creative pairing the band ever had. This is my favourite Cosmograf album and I listened to it on Spotify so many times, I thought it was time to buy it here and endorse the artist directly. Although I have selected a favourite track, there are actually more than one :) Aspire, Achieve and When the Air Runs Out are also great songs. I love concept albums and I love neo prog. The hope, ambition and desperation are so very well expressed on this album, so what's not to love ;) dromer1967
